Music Association for the
Visually Impaired Students
of New Jersey (MAVIS)

Welcome

MAVIS of NJ is a non-profit organization comprised solely of volunteers dedicated to providing musical instruments and instruction to the legally blind of all ages. Currently, our youngest student is a 5-year-old girl who was born blind and is learning to play the piano; our oldest is a 77-year-old man who lost his sight due to illness, and is learning to play the guitar.

History

This innovative program was developed in the late 1970s when our founder decided that those with visual impairments could greatly benefit from individualized music instruction. We have seen our students gain a new confidence, a greater degree of independence and improved opportunities for socialization and employment. To our knowledge, we are the only project of this type in the country. In the state of NJ, there are 2,400 blind between the ages of 5 and 18 that are unable to participate in sports and other forms of recreational activities available to sighted individuals. Our goal is to provide as many as possible with a music background to take the place of these other activities. MAVIS is also implementing a college scholarship program for visually impaired students.
